Panel 6: The Impact of Covid Restrictions on Low – and Middle-Income Countries
Speakers discussed the complexities of global health crises, questioning traditional definitions of success solely based on controlling the virus. They emphasized the need to consider broader ramifications, such as risk factors and pandemic preparedness, and to critically reflect on pandemic measures. Challenges and limitations of implementing lockdowns were also discussed, with a focus on balancing individual rights and public health. Misinformation in global health decision-making was another key topic, with speakers highlighting the need to address this issue while also considering the balance between free expression and addressing misinformation. Finally, speakers emphasized the importance of respecting authorities while disobeying unjust orders and of considering the epidemiology of risk and people’s needs when implementing public health measures. This conference is the first anywhere in the world to consider collectively the impacts of Covid suppression measures in Low- and Middle-Income Countries. The conference brings together scholars from the health and social sciences who have been working on questions regarding education, gender, socioeconomic impacts and political economies related to the Covid response. While there has been much focus on these questions in High Income Countries, there has yet to be a sustained and inter-regional discussion from Low- and Middle-Income Countries. This conference addresses this disparity.
