Panel 3: The Impact of Covid Restrictions on Low – and Middle-Income Countries
Participants discussed their experiences and perspectives on managing school closures during the pandemic. Thomas shared how fear was used as a tool in lockdown management in Turkey, while Nicolas highlighted the inefficiency of government policies in Angola. Alejandro presented on the heterogeneous impact of policies on different populations in Bolivia, and Tariq discussed the situation of refugee children in Turkey. Speakers also discussed the challenges of online education for younger children and the importance of face-to-face interaction and socialization in the learning process. Finally, one speaker shared their personal experience as a public figure in a campaign to reopen schools in the Netherlands during the pandemic. This conference is the first anywhere in the world to consider collectively the impacts of Covid suppression measures in Low- and Middle-Income Countries. The conference brings together scholars from the health and social sciences who have been working on questions regarding education, gender, socioeconomic impacts and political economies related to the Covid response. While there has been much focus on these questions in High Income Countries, there has yet to be a sustained and inter-regional discussion from Low- and Middle-Income Countries. This conference addresses this disparity.
