Panel 1: The Impact of Covid Restrictions on Low – and Middle-Income Countries
During a conversation on the effectiveness and necessity of lockdowns in Africa during the COVID-19 pandemic, speakers discussed the challenges of implementing lockdowns in communal settings and the lack of scientific guidance. They also highlighted the importance of contact tracing and seroprevalence in determining the necessity of lockdown. Later, the conversation turned to governance and public health decision making, with speakers discussing the limitations of modeling and decision making in public health policy, as well as the pushback from the public regarding vaccine hesitancy. The importance of considering the bottom of the pyramid in policy decisions was also emphasized. This conference is the first anywhere in the world to consider collectively the impacts of Covid suppression measures in Low- and Middle-Income Countries. The conference brings together scholars from the health and social sciences who have been working on questions regarding education, gender, socioeconomic impacts and political economies related to the Covid response. While there has been much focus on these questions in High Income Countries, there has yet to be a sustained and inter-regional discussion from Low- and Middle-Income Countries. This conference addresses this disparity.
