Panel 7: The Impact of Covid Restrictions on Low – and Middle-Income Countries
Speakers discussed the challenges and opportunities in public health policymaking during the COVID-19 pandemic, highlighting the importance of considering marginalized communities’ perspectives and the need for more comprehensive and inclusive approaches. They also discussed the far-reaching consequences of the pandemic on society, including poverty, food insecurity, and mental health, and the intentional effort by powerful individuals to privatize healthcare. Additionally, speakers discussed the World Bank’s role in shaping global health policies, particularly in the post-COVID recovery, and the need for transparency and accountability in global health policymaking. This conference is the first anywhere in the world to consider collectively the impacts of Covid suppression measures in Low- and Middle-Income Countries. The conference brings together scholars from the health and social sciences who have been working on questions regarding education, gender, socioeconomic impacts and political economies related to the Covid response. While there has been much focus on these questions in High Income Countries, there has yet to be a sustained and inter-regional discussion from Low- and Middle-Income Countries. This conference addresses this disparity.
